$12 Million

Albert Einstein was a German theoretical physicist, one of the of all time. As of 1955, Albert Einstein’s net worth was $12 million. While Einstein is best recognized for inventing the theory of relativity, he also contributed significantly to the development of quantum mechanics.

His work is also well-known for its impact on scientific philosophy. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics “for his contributions to theoretical physics, particularly his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect,” which was a key step in the development of quantum theory.

Einstein’s intellectual and creative achievements have made him synonymous with “genius.” Along with his work, he collaborated on the Bose-Einstein statistics and the Einstein refrigerator.

An article on the photoelectric effect (which led to quantum theory), Brownian motion, special theory of relativity, and E = mc2 were published in Annalen der Physik in the year 1905. These four works revolutionized our understanding of space, time, and matter.

Einstein’s first published paper in Annalen der Physik was on capillary attraction. “Folgerungen von demCapillaritätserscheinungen” (Conclusions from Capillarity Observations) was published in the year 1901. A pair of 1902–03 papers attempted to statistically explain atomic phenomena (thermodynamics). These studies paved the way for the 1905 paper on Brownian motion, which proved that Brownian motion provides convincing evidence of molecular existence. In the year 1903 and the year 1904, he studied the effects of atomic-scale on diffusion processes.

To explain variations in density of a fluid approaching its critical point, Einstein resorted to thermodynamic fluctuations. Normally, the second derivative of free energy regulates density fluctuations. It is zero at the critical point, causing large fluctuations. Variations in density scatter light at all wavelengths, giving the fluid a milky white hue. For the blue hue of the sky, Einstein links this to Rayleigh scattering. Einstein studied density fluctuations to quantify critical opalescence and demonstrate how it arises from matter’s atomistic structure.
