He served as a Minister of State in 1995 in the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government under the portfolios of Education and Culture. Later on, he joined the National Congress Party in 1999 and served as the Minister of State under the portfolios like School Education, Information and Public Relations, and Sports & Youth Welfare. In 2001, he was promoted as a cabinet minister in the State Government and served at different government departments till 2014.
In 2019, he again won the Katol constituency as an NCP candidate in 2019 Maharashtra Assembly Elections. He was appointed as the Home Minister of Maharashtra in 2019 when the Mahavikas alliance of NCP, Congress, and Shiv Sena came in power under the leadership of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. He is also the Guardian Minister of Gondia district.
Recently he made the headlines when he stated that the case of Sushant Singh Rajput suicide was politicized for political gains. He also condemned the demand to transfer the Sushant Singh Rajput case to the Central Bureau of Investigation. He added that Mumbai Police has started the investigation in the case and the case was properly handled by the Mumbai Police.
Moreover, earlier Anil Deshmukh also ruled out every request for the CBI probe in the Sushant Singh Rajput case and stated that Mumbai Police will continue to investigate the matter.
