Career

Anne Frank started her career by writing a diary. Miep Gies sent Otto Frank her diary and a bundle of stray notes she had saved to give to Anne in July 1945, after the Brilleslijper sisters confirmed Anne and Margot Frank’s deaths.

Otto Frank later claimed he was surprised Anne had kept such an accurate and detailed record of their time in hiding. Agonizingly reading his diary, he remembered the events described and noted that many of the more amusing occurrences had already been read out by his daughter.

To his surprise, he discovered his daughter’s more private side and parts of her diary she had never revealed “It was enlightening… I had no idea how deep her thoughts and feelings were… She had repressed them all “‘ He considered publishing it after being touched by her unwavering drive to write.

A private notebook in which she shared her opinions, Frank’s diary began as a secret. She was open about her life, her family, and friends while acknowledging her ambition to write for publication.

An exiled Dutch government member in London, Gerrit Bolkestein, announced on the radio that he would create a public chronicle of the Dutch people’s suffering under German control. He recommended publishing letters and diaries, and Frank decided to submit her work when the chance arose.

For publication, she began editing her work, cutting out and redoing sections. Her first notebook was augmented by loose-leaf sheets and notebooks. Her household and servants had pseudonyms.

Fritz Pfeffer became Albert Düssell, Hermann, Petronella, and Peter van Daan became Hermann, Petronella, and Peter van Daan. Her edited posts were devoted to “Kitty,” a fictional character in Cissy van Marxveldt’s Joop terHeul novels.

Otto Frank combined her original journal, version A, with her edited version, version B, to produce the first version for publication. He restored his family’s actual names but kept his pseudonyms.
