Heche’s family relocated several times while she was growing up, once settling in an Amish neighborhood. At the age of 12, the family moved to Ocean City, New Jersey. She started working at a supper club nearby Swainton because of the family’s tight financial situation. Heche’s 45-year-old father passed away in March 1983 when she was 13 years old from HIV, which she thought he acquired from a gay lover.

Heche said that from the moment she was a baby until about the age of 12, he frequently sexually assaulted her, causing her vaginal herpes. Her18-year-old brother Nathan got fatally injured in a vehicle accident three months after her father passed away. Heche maintained that it had been a suicide, but the official finding was that he dropped unconscious at the vehicle and hit a tree.
