He played catcher for the College of Southern Nevada (SWAC, NJCAA) in 2010, his first season as an NCAA Division I student-athlete. Harper was 17 years old at the time. His elder brother Bryan, a starting pitcher with the Southern Nevada Coyotes and a teammate from high school, frequently worked with him as a battery. When Harper made the move from college to professional baseball, he had an edge since the SWAC, like the MLB, employs wooden bats in conference play.

In 66 games, he hit 31 home runs and knocked in 98 runs, batting.443 with an OBP of.526 and a slugging percentage of.987 for a batting average.443 (SLG). His 31 home runs shattered the school’s previous record of 12 set in 2010. He was selected the SWAC Player of the Year for the year of 2010.

He hit for the cycle and finished 6-for-7 with five RBIs in the Western district finals of the 2010 NJCAA World Series. The next day, in a doubleheader, he went 2-for-5 with a three-run double in the first game and 6-for-6 with four home runs, a triple, and a double in the second game.

For questioning the third strike decision on 2 June of that year, Don Gilmore removed him from the National Junior College World Series game. After leaving the plate, he used his bat to draw a line in the ground to indicate where he felt the pitch was. He was ejected for the second time this season and was suspended for two games.

Southern Nevada lost the game in which Harper was expelled and lost their following game while Harper was banned, eliminating them from the tournament as a result of the suspension. The Golden Spikes Award, presented annually to the nation’s top amateur baseball player, was bestowed to Harper in 2010.
