Death

John Madden, the Hall of Fame coach who became one of the most known ambassadors of professional football in America, reaching millions and decades via the broadcast booth and the iconic computer game of the same name, died on Tuesday. He was 85 years old.

The National Football League confirmed his death in a statement that omitted information on the cause of death. He died in his Pleasanton, California, home, according to his agent, Sandy Montag.

Madden made a mark on the sport on a level with luminaries like George Halas, Paul Brown, and his coaching hero, Vince Lombardi, in his irrepressible style and with his unmistakable voice. Madden’s impact, imbued with Everyman sensibilities and peppered with wild gesticulations and paroxysms of onomatopoeia — wham! doink! whoosh! – elevated the N.F.L. to new heights for nearly 40 years.

“John Madden is as influential as anybody in the history of football,” Al Michaels, Madden’s broadcast partner at ABC and NBC from 2002 to 2008, stated in a 2013 interview. “Tell me someone who accomplished all of John’s accomplishments over this extended period.”

Madden established what has become a typical procedure in the trade – monitoring practices, examining game footage, and interviewing coaches and players on Fridays and Saturdays.
