Martin Luther King Jr. started his career as a Baptist minister. Forcing a white man to give up his bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, in March 1955, Claudette Colvin, a fifteen-year-old black schoolgirl, defied Jim Crow laws, which enforced racial segregation. Because it involved a child, E. D. Nixon, and Clifford Durr opted not to pursue the case.
Nine months later, on 1 December 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat. The two incidents prompted Nixon’s and King’s Montgomery bus boycott.
