Michael Oher started his career as a guard. He was a member of the school’s football team during his freshman year.

At the recommendation of Tony Henderson, an auto technician who was taking care of him temporarily, he sought admission to Briarcrest Christian School. After his grandmother’s death, Henderson hoped that he would join him by enrolling his kid in the school.

Football coach Hugh Freeze forwarded his application to the headmaster of the school, who agreed to admit him as long as Oher completed an at-home study program.

Even though he didn’t complete the program, the headmaster welcomed him after realizing that he had been expelled from the public school system because of his prerequisite.

Division II (2A) Lineman of the Year in 2003 and First Team Tennessee All-State selection, he played for Freeze and Briarcrest’s offensive line coach, Tim Long. By Scout.com’s 5-star rating, Oher was ranked as the nation’s fifth-best offensive tackle prospect.

Before that season, he had spent the previous 20 months at Briarcrest in various foster homes. The Tuohy family, a married couple with two young children attending Briarcrest, took in him in 2004 and later adopted him. After learning about his traumatic background, the family started to care for him. His parents also paid for a tutor to work with him for 20 hours a week.
