With the experimental Theatre Company of Boston, Channing began her acting career. In 1969, she was seen performing in the group’s Off-Broadway production of the Elaine May play titled Adaptation/Next. In 1970, as part of the Circle in the Square at Ford’s Theatre program, she worked in a revival of Arsenic and Old Lace, which was directed by Theodore Mann.
In 1971, in Two Gentlemen of Verona – The Musical, Channing made her Broadway debut. She was seen working with John Guare, who was the playwright.
