He eventually took up the mandolin and the ukulele, which he made famous. After having his appendix removed in 1945, he seldom left his room except to attend school, where he was classified as a lousy student. A succession of lowly occupations led him to drop out of high school.

In a 1968 Tonight Show interview, he revealed discovering his higher register singing ability: “I was singing along to the radio and thought, “Wow, that’s odd.” I can also fly.'” “I never realized I had another high register,” he claimed in a 1969 interview, after hearing Rudy Vallée sing in a falsetto.

In the early 1950s, he got a job as a courier at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios in New York, where he grew attracted to the entertainment business. In a local talent event, he performed “You Are My Sunshine” in falsetto. He began performing at amateur dance club evenings as Texarkana Tex, Judas K. Foxglove, Vernon Castle, and Emmett Swink.

To stand out from the crowd, he dressed in crazy clothes, grew his hair out to shoulder length, and wore pasty white makeup. Until his father intervened, Herbert’s mother could not comprehend his change in look and planned to take him to a psychiatrist at Bellevue Hospital.

In 1959, he appeared as “Larry Love, the Singing Canary” at Hubert’s Museum and Live Flea Circus in Hees Square. While there, he met management who took him on unpaid auditions in Greenwich Village, where he played the ukulele and sang in a falsetto the song that became his hallmark, “Tiptoe Through the Tulips”.

A six-hour per night, six-night per week position at Greenwich Village’s Page 3 cost him $96 a month in 1963. He then performed as “Dary Dover” and then “Sir Heothy Hems” for two years. Booking him to open for a “midget” act, George King gave him the stage moniker “Tiny Tim,” which he would eventually trademark.
