Career
Stephen Hawking started his career as the Lucasian Professor of Maths at the University of Cambridge. With Penrose’s help, Hawking developed his doctoral thesis’ singularity theorem concepts. This covers both singularities and the idea that the universe started as a singularity. Their joint paper won runner-up in the year 1968 Gravity Research Foundation.
Based on general relativity and Alexander Friedmann’s physical cosmology ideas, they demonstrated in the year 1970 that the cosmos began as a singularity. In the year 1969, Hawking was awarded the newly created Fellowship for Distinction in Science.
In the year 1970, Hawking introduced the second law of black hole dynamics, saying that a black hole’s event horizon can never shrink. Together with James M. Bardeen and Brandon Carter, he established the four laws of black hole mechanics. Jacob Bekenstein, a John Wheeler Ph.D. student, went further—and correctly—in applying thermodynamic concepts.
