One time, when several black students were penalized for violating school rules, he walked out of class with other kids to protest the disparity. Black kids were let back into the school by a group of priests. He took part in anti-war protests while in college and saw the riots in Harvard Square in 1970 firsthand. His disenchantment with communist causes and shift to conservatism is attributed to this.

From 1974 to 1977, Thomas was an apprentice advocate general of Missouri under the State Advocate General John Danforth, who is an old graduate of Yale. He was the only one African-American persona of John’s crew.

When John was appointed to the United States Senate in 1976, Clarence left to become an advocate with an American agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation called The Monsanto Company located in St. Louis.
